That's actually a cure for "stiction", a phenomenon in which the heads
actually stuck to the face of the disk platters. I don't think I've seen
a case of stiction or bearing failure in a hard drive for fifteen years.
Desktop drives are all made with "non contact" bearings, it's nearly
impossible for them to fail. The size of the heads is so small these
days that stiction doesn't happen either, although it was a very real
issue in the days of 5-20MB drives.
Yes, I'm old enough to have actually had a 5MB disk with 14" platters,
and used an 80MB 14" drive for a couple of years. That one weighed 95
pounds, and the cables to connect it to the computer weighed five more.
Those drives had the advantage that you could always just open the top
of the drive and move the head by hand if it got stuck, as opposed 5.25"
drives that tended to be sealed.
