Thanks to all for the advice. For interest in the future here is what I
found.
The Adobe site gives the location of the Preference file
which is different slightly from Lightroom 2 and XP. But in fact I never
found the Preference at the Program Files/Adobe/Lightroom 3/
user/appl data/roaming/adobe/preferences/
So far as I can tell this file doesn't exist on my computer.
What I did find was three versions of LR 3. One 3, one 3.2 and one 3.3 all
created at different dates. I deleted the 3.2 and 3.3.
I then went back and opend lightroom from the desktop and it didn't ask for
an update search. As far as I can tel I still have 3.3
installed. And the file import function now works just fine. Go figure!
