Basically I've always done this. I use Bridge to bring the images from the
cards via a card reader into my "2010 Capture Folder", and these are
separated by date, etc. Then I import into Lightroom from that folder.
It's faster. I've found, at least in my case that every upgrade from Adobe
is installed as a new edition of Lightroom and that was my problem. I had
to delete the prior versions. All of my downloads are done to an isolated
"download folder" so if I have to delete a program I can easily go back and
reinstall from the download folder. This folder also protects the Programs
folder from malware.
As to Best Operating Practices I run the OS and all Programs on a separate
SSD drive and all data on other drives.
