To promote your name or website. That's one reason, another is to improve. Let's not forget that the majority of photographers that belong to this group are probably amateurs hoping to find a way to make money with their photography or just to get published. I won't disparage these people and they deserve to have a voice here.
I wasn't overly impressed with the photos but the site looks like it is legitimate and doesn't pretend to be something it's not.
I joined...probably won't become involved unless they tempt me in with something real cool, but if the site does well and I have a link from them it was worth the time.
