Lead, definitely. And, if you don't mind spending money, add some
steel shot from one of the big box sporting goods store. A twenty-five
pound bag will set you back at least $20, but adding that to lead tire
weights will fill in the empty spaces, and get you up to 40-50 pounds
a weight. I built four using 3" PVC 30" long, filled with tire weights
and one 25# bag of shot each -- they weighed in at about 50# each.
There's a lot of air between tire weights because they're so
irregular. My wife made black canvas sleeves for them, with slots at
the top, so they were less ugly. It was a lot of work, and expensive
in the end.
Finally went to a fabricator and had four steel bars cut to spec. I
have 2.5 square steel (doesn't roll), with a loop welded to the to for
hanging. They're 30" long, and weight 75# each. Spray painted black.
They were even more expensive, but they are effective.
If you have horizontal sta-bars, weights are more effective lashed
horizontally to the sta-bars, down low.. Triangulation also helps a
great deal -- Holly Olinger wrote a good article on this in the last
issue of the NAIA Independent. Try to find a copy, as the information
on stabilizing the canopy was excellent.
Happi-Feet are another interesting alternative, but even more
expensive than getting steel bars fabbed. Modeled after tractor weights.
