I agree, it depends a lot on the image. But it is nice to have uniformity.
And perhaps a compromise solution is to to go with a luster or a semi-gloss
appearance. I have gradually switched to using Epson Premium Luster and have
noticed that it seems to show images with enough gloss to achieve the high
detail and color and yet not so glossy as to show the slight waves that
often show on glossy. I have noticed that I receive many customer
complements about the high detail that shows. But then again my work may be
more amenable to that format. Perhaps black and white images or abstract
images might look better on mat (neither of which I do).
