Most people have never seen matte color prints since only custom labs
ever used it and most of them are gone including mine. Luster passes for
matte in almost all labs today but there are a few other choices. Fuji
makes a few different non gloss print media as does Kodak, but
luster/gloss is all you're going to see in the stores because surveys
show that's all people want. I hate luster because the slightly textured
surface destroys details. Matte has the same sheen, but without the
texture, similar to Ilford's pearl surface black and white photo paper.
It's beautiful. If anyone can remember back far enough, in Kodak's terms
these were labeled F (glossy), N (smooth) and E (luster). E was only
used by the wedding and portrait guys, never for commercial or fine art
work. There's also a flat matte that has no shine at all.

I think what I've learned is there is never just one correct answer when

comes to this wide open world of photography! Some might be better
glossy.
Some might be better matte. I have seen Costco mentioned a few times but
have
never tried them. I might give them a test print or two to so see what a
'medium
lustre' looks like.
Maybe if we could get the paper to smell like fresh 'out of the oven'
baked
chocolate chip cookies, people wouldn't care about the finish on the
photo!

I agree, it depends a lot on the image. But it is nice to have
uniformity.
And perhaps a compromise solution is to to go with a luster or a
semi-gloss
appearance. I have gradually switched to using Epson Premium Luster and
have
noticed that it seems to show images with enough gloss to achieve the
high
detail and color and yet not so glossy as to show the slight waves that
often show on glossy. I have noticed that I receive many customer
complements about the high detail that shows. But then again my work may
be
more amenable to that format. Perhaps black and white images or abstract
images might look better on mat (neither of which I do).
