[artshow_photo] CS5 vs. Lightroom or PLUS LightRoom

I attended the 20th anniversary of Photoshop and learned a few things. I
use LR for my intake and general processing, and CS5 for photo finishing,
and ImagePrint for printing. At the celebration I got the chance to meet
with some of the principals and learned the following.

CS5 is written on a very unwieldy platform of software, the more features
that added, the more stability problems are encountered, and the harder it
gets to get it right. Adobe saw this when they were doing CS3 and started
looking at alternatives. The platform that LR is on is much more user
friendly, and Adobe purchased it from a competitor, with the assumption that
LR would eventually become a specialized version of CS for photographers.
Anyone who has used previous versions of LR has seen the impressive growth
of the product.

It is far better than anything else for cataloging and storing, with easy
recovery of images, even from extensive catalogs. The primary developing
tools in CS have been introduced into LR, along with tools like slideshows.
It is my understanding that Adobe foresees a day when photographers will see
LR as their primary tool, and in many ways for me it already is. The one
thing I would like to see is version of Bridge inside LR, as the visual
tabletop works better for me, but I go back and forth with each sorting
system. A work in progressŠ.

Look for LR to continue to improve over the coming years. Adobe is very
committed to having an excellent stand alone photography processing software
from CS.
