Jim - One big advantage that aluminum frames have over wood frames is the ease of replacing prints, and/or cleaning out those nasty specs of grit that grow under the glass overnight.
Wood frames, assuming that you seal the back with a dust cover, are not meant to be reopened, and are nothing less than a pain in the butt when you discover one of those specs of grit AFTER you seal it off.
Aluminum frames are also less expensive than a furniture grade wood frame. If you damage a side of an aluminum frame, it can be replaced easily. Not so with a wood frame.
That said, I've always had an affinity towards dark cherry frames, and have often used them in the past. They ooze the perception of "quality and richness."
I think it's pretty much personal taste - both yours AND the customer's. And therein lies the problem with frames - there are so many colors and styles that you cannot possibly predict what the perspective customer will want.
My opinion, advice, or whatever you want to call it is to do what I did several years ago - eliminate frames (and mats and glass) ALL TOGETHER. I do flush mounting onto gatorfoam, and this year introduced some large size canvas galery wraps.
I use to STRESS OUT so much over mat and frame choices, plus their weight was costing me mega bucks in transmission replacements. I honestly believe that when I eliminated the stress involved with mats, glass, and frames I added 10 years to my life.
You're already showing the first signs of stress by asking your question "Aluminum frames vs Wood frames."
