I agree your prices are too low. Especially if you are wanting this as a
real income, and not just pocket change, or to say you have sold work.
Most artists I know selling at the lower numbers are doing it for "fun."
They are doctors, lawyers, or retired with a stable income and just want
to have enough for a new lens by the end of the year. . . or if not,
they are generally struggling to make ends meet and have decided price
is the reason they are having problem selling work. I know one who
changed his work after a number of years of dropping prices and is now
selling at his higher prices again.
My prices are at least 5x and usually 10x cost on matted work using
quality materials, a little tighter when it comes to framed work, but
typically my framed work is about double the cost of the matted prints
for easy reference. So a 16x20 print matted to 20x24 is $125 and in a
good frame is $250. I'm actually raising my framed prices this year.
If you plan on selling through galleries or shops, they generally take
50% or more, or expect a 50% discount if they are buying them. They
expect to sell them at the same price you sell them for. They don't want
you underselling them.
Here's a few links to articles on pricing art, I think each one also
leads to others for still more info. . .
