I'm currently reading a book called "The DAM Book, Digital Asset Management for Photographers" by Peter Krogh. Since you are starting out with new software for managing your images, you may want to consider this book or something like it. There are lots of concrete recommendations for structuring your storage space and folders, file naming suggestions, etc. Make sure you get the Second Edition.
