In regard to the farms, I understand why they are reacting as they are --
PETA and HSUS have been way outside the bounds of common sense and decency
in harrassing farmers in the USA and Canada the last couple of years.
Farmers are now understandably wary of anyone taking photos (of their
animals in particular): too many PETA/HSUS generated images have been
photoshopped or distorted to make it look like PETA/HSUS has a case against
the farmer for taking their animals away from them and thus knocking an
otherwise very-close-to-the-margins business into ruinous finacial
circumstances with a little bit of rabble-rousing.
If we legit photographers treat farmers as we would treat any other private
business owner (that is, asking for permission to photograph, providing
proper release forms and abiding by their rules for the shoot), I think we
will find the farmers not only much more relaxed and even generous about us
taking photos but will find that we get a good rep fairly quickly in the
farming communities. A lot of the farmers around here know me by now or
know of me, and they also know that anyone NOT offering them a business
card, a property release form, and a bit of chatter about how beautiful
their animals are in the the gorgeous setting of their farm is immediately
suspect. The second that someone on the side of the road with a camera
shows any hostility or defensiveness about what they're doing to a farmer
these days, they are automatically suspect and likely to be turned off the
PRIVATE LAND and to be told not to photograph the PRIVATELY OWNED ANIMALS.
It's a two-way street: I work hard to show the best of farms and farming,
legally and fairly, and they work hard to put great food at a decent price
on my table.

Heck, you don't need to travel that far. I was in Boston, MA, good old U. S.
of A., a year or so ago, on a public street and was told by a security guard
that I couldn't take any pictures of the federal buildings around me. He
then stood there and watched me until I left the area. I know my rights but
I had limited time in the city so didn't want to spend the afternoon sitting
in an office until he was convinced that I know my rights. After I walked a
couple of blocks away, I put the telephoto lens on and fired off a few shots
just to spite him, even though he had walked away.
