For me they just move from the dropbox service onto the ipad as well as simply using images from the ipad gallery and I've never seen that message and I've move quite a few over. You're well within the maximum size limit of 4096 pixels so that's not the problem.
One issue I do have with some image apps from time to time is running out of memory when I have a lot of apps open. Try double clicking the home button and closing down all but portfolio and trying again. When you exit from the app it continues to run consuming memory until you do that so if you've opened a number of things and they're still running strange things can happen. You may also want to power the ipad down and then back up again, but that doesn't close the apps, you need to do that first.
Another thought is that perhaps it's related to the ipad 2. I'm just loaded ios 4.3 and checked that it stills works, it does, but I have the original ipad.
