Michael,
I would suggest that you have packaged prints of each framed image that you
have on the booth walls. Depending on the show and the size of the booth,
you may have 10- 20 framed images on you walls. You may have other matted
images available in the bins as well but I wouldn't go crazy with this in
your first show. I would not print too many of each image. Perhaps 3 of
each size would be doable (depending on the image, as some sizes are more
appropriate for certain images). Most people that I know mostly offer 3
sizes. Common sizes are (matted size): 8x10, 11x14, 16x20. But there are
certainly other size combinations. I personally have too many images as I
have 60 different images that I offer in a variety of sizes. I have been
doing the shows for only 4 years and am gradually reducing the number as I
see what works. Many successful show photographers have only 25-30 images
that they routinely show. Hopefully you will get other responses on this
site thereby collecting more knowledge.
And you might be shocked at the variation between shows and even between
days of the same show. For example, last year I had one image that I had 3
of each size available and with in an hour of the start of the show I sold
every single image (11 matted prints), including a larger 22x28 size that I
just happened to have in the bin. I went home that night, staying up late,
printing and matting another 25 prints of various size for the next day (of
a 3 day show). And guess what, not one print sold! So you never know what
will happen. But just, as a general recommendation, I would print only a few
of each image and limit the show to 25-30 different images in roughly 3 of
each size. I have seen that you will eventually find what works best for
you as you continue doing shows. But by not going crazy on the first show
you will limit your financial outlay and see what works before investing
more.
My area is safari/wildlife and I learned very quickly that what I think is
interesting may be totally different then what the customer may think is
interesting. What might place in a Nat'l Geographic contest might look ugly
on a wall. And an art show is usually about what a customer would like to
place on his/her wall. So when I started to think that direction I did much
better. But as I listen to customers I continue to learn and refine my show
and my sales continue to grow.
Oh, another thing to consider is that during the recession period smaller
stuff moves faster.
