Unless you get arrested a cop can't actually search your vehicle. Only thing they can do is see what's visible from the window. Anything they tell you to do is really just them asking sternly. Only thing you really have to worry about is getting a cop who thinks you telling them no is probable cause.

Several times when I have done shows in Texas, I've seen cops with hands on hips overseeing young men dragging everything out of their vehicle and onto the roadside, presumably in a search for drugs. I consider this a travesty of freedom, and I have not observed this in any other state. My nightmare would be to be stopped on the way to a show, and having to haul everything out of my van to satisfy a cop. One reason I don't particularly like doing shows in Texas. And I guess I'll have to add Arizona to that list.
