Subject: Selling Stock Photography Re: Portfolio
Ok, no worries.
I have been producing stock photos for 6 years, starting out in the micros. I have no official training, but my mother was a photographer and I have had a cast off 35mm SLR in my hands since I was a kid. I spent three years adding photos to the micros, then took two years off to travel to over 30 countries with my wife, living entirely off micro earnings and a large RM sale from Photoshelter's short-lived stock agency. After we got back, the micros were in decline, with new shots not making the sale any more.
I have a large portfolio of over 2500 images on the largest micro agencies, with a similar amount on alamy, both RM and RF. I also have RM images on Age and in Getty via the Flickr programme.
I no longer add many images to the micros as it is no longer worthwhile financially. Alamy also yields very little. Age does well for my small portfolio and Getty produces the highest RPI. I cannot simply drop the micros as they still provide half a decent income but would like to find alternative agencies for my current and future work.
I shoot with an aging 5D and a Canon G11 and housing for underwater stuff.

I am fully aware of the anti-micro sentiment here and agree with it in many ways. On the other hand, I spent two years wandering the world on the income it provided and still rely on the dwindling returns from my existing images while I produce a new body of work.
Somewhat embarrassingly, I don't have my own website, but have an online presence via Flickr, Deviant Art and JPG Mag. I am also considering setting up a local agency for the Canary Islands with a fellow photographer.
Enough detail?
Alex
