Hello: I am new here too and mostly lurking for now.
I am an artist/graphic artist by trade and yes it is a good idea to have a student design a logo but. Yes there's a but, if you don't know the rules of logo design and when to break them you are taking a chance using a student who is still learning.
Also even students need to earn a living wage (school loans and such to pay for). I wouldn't ask a student to charge less then the going rate for the area you live in, just like you wouldn't suggest someone new to the photography world to undercharge for their work to break in. That just ends up hurting everyone in the long run.
I hope this isn't taken the wrong way. It's just frustrating when work is undervalued because someone is "new"
