[artshow_photo] Re: Need Help Setting up 7600 on new Mac Pro

If you're going to have to replace your 7600 anyway, you might want to consider switching printers altogether and skipping the RIP.

I recently decided I wanted to move up from a 17-inch printer (Epson 3800) to a 24-inch. My initial thought was a 7900, but after a lot of research and agonizing, I went for a Canon IPF6300 and I am really happy I made the decision.

Print quality is superb, and it's very user friendly. Canon's Photoshop plug-in for printing greatly simplifies the process, and they have a media configuration tool that makes it very easy to add third-party media. Also, the few times that I've had to call their support line with questions, I've gotten through immediately.

It also seems to be very frugal in its ink usage. It comes with 90ml starter cartridges. I've run a little more than 40 feet of 24-inch canvas through it so far and those cartridges are still at about the 50 percent level.

I bought the printer in December from IT Supplies, and after the $700 rebate Canon was offering, it was just under $2,000 -- quite amazing for a printer of this size and quality. IT Supplies' price on it now is $2,649, and though Canon's latest $700 rebate offer expired the end of March, they may very well renew it.

Here's one of the reviews of the printer that helped me make my decision: http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/canon_ipf6300_review/

I did consider re-attaching my old G4 just to print, but physical space near my 7600 is limited, and not enough room for two towers and two monitors (my new 27" monitor will not work on my older G4). Even my calibration and new custom profiles with a Color Munki were not in the ball park for printing.

Since the RIP takes over all control of the Epson, as it is in effect a new driver, I can only presume that the required newer Epson printer driver (v8.19) was the problem somehow. The print quality with the trial RIP is the best I've ever had with the 7600.

> Good news - the RIP can be used with any new Epson I buy, 24" or smaller. So the idea of purchasing a 17" or or even a 13" printer instead has crossed my mind. The idea of printing smaller at home, and farming out bigger sizes might be something to consider, especially since I've started offering gallery wraps now. And those are all farmed out.
