[artshow_photo] Re: When does a photo stop being a photo?

Gee eric you opened an interesting discussion here and BK made an
interesting remark as far as people not knowing their history. It is
all subjective but you mention " using light sensitive mediums to
record an image"......It was a wet lab or darkroom and film was light
sensitive.
Technology has produced a different medium which is light sensitive:
the chip, and cards....STILL light sensitive.
The same can be applied to using a computer or straight from a digital
camera to produce an image compared to using the chemicals and
projector in a darkroom.
Printers of today also communicate with the computer
HENCE unless you are using a darkroom and SLR or other film based
camera you are doing digital photography.
Now, creating a montage of different images or multiple exposures is
still photography. You are still recording part of a scene...

As far as 3D rendering...Yes it is still photography, maybe as a
scultpture or call it 3D photography LOL...
You know Eric, what matters is it doesn't matter what you call it.
Enjoy what you do and do your best thats all....
If you are after producing work that sells at artshows then find out
what works and if you have to compromise what you really like doing
then do it to make a buck.

"I am well aware that there has been a variety of photographers in the
past that have used multiple exposures and darkroom techniques to
splice images. However, that is still clearly within the definition of
photography as you are using light sensitive mediums to record an image.

Taking photos combining them and adding elements with digital painting
techniques is not the same thing. Would you consider a 3D rendering a
photo just because the texture maps used were from photographs?

Again, it is really a subjective debate.
