Hi Eric, I guess we may have spoken...I'm 99% certain the artist you speak of(I can never remember his name but I've seen him before) was just down the street from me. Lee-Margaret, another photographer was directly across from me.
Anyway, in my opinnion no it is not photography, Lee and myself had the same discussion about him at the show. Other then some cropping, and some minor color correction if I spend more then 5-10 minutes on a picture it is probably not worth the effort. There's the occasional exception to that rule, but those are the sorts of moments that I won't be able to just come back another day for but even then it's more fixxing a color correction nightmare then replacing large sections of a picture. Lee claimed she doesn't even do that much...shoots jpeg, and prints what she shoots. No photoshop. How true that is I cannot say(says she never has any dust specs) but for the most part I'll bite.
The artist whom which you speak of says he's a photographer. They're all his photographs. He does all of his own lighting, he sets everything up meticulously knowing how he's going to put it together in the end. So yes, he can say he's a photographer but no, he's no longer selling photographs in my personal opinnion. But that's a can of worms that will be openning and re-openning itself for years to come.
Personally, photography is dead. But what was re-born isn't so bad either. From here on out though it's a matter of ethics I suppose. Be honest with your customer about what you are doing, and if they believe the it's worth buying they will...when the economy pics back up I hope :)
Anyone else at Santa Fe? I barely managed to make expenses.
Matt
