I tape my image directly to the mat in two places - one at the top (about 2 inches of tape for an 11x14 going into a 16x20 mat, and one diagonally at the top corner so that a portion of the top is caught and a portion of the side. I use a special 3M tape that will allow one to remove it from the mat w/out hurting the photo - and the tape that touches the image only touches the border around the image, not the image itself.
