I've been trying to figure that question out for years. I'm always amazed at what people buy and what they don't. When I first started doing art shows seriously in 2007, I took a variety of pictures to see what sold best, birds, butterflies, flowers, black and white scenes, etc. About 40 shows later, I'm still trying to figure that out. In 2008 I sold a lot of framed work with multiple photos in one collage frame, so over the next winter I created a lot more. Hardly sold any in 2009, and ended up giving a few of them away.
I've got a picture of Great Blue Heron that I used as an example showing someone how to really push the color (using LAB and curves). It was a gray overcast day and I brought out the little blue that was in the sky. The method I used really made the Heron bright blue and not very natural looking. My friend liked it, so I took it to a show, and it sold. Printed it again, framed it, and hung it beside some Blue Heron that looked more natural. Sold it again.
When someone figures out the secret to what really sells at shows, they could make a fortune selling that secret to the rest of us!
