You know it is different for everyone, depending on what your
expectations are and how committed you are to showing at art Fairs.
What level are you at, what do you need from a show to return the next
year.
I'll do 25+ shows a year, travel around the country, and do this full
time. I make a living, and it has nothing to do with formulas. The
biggest mistake in my opinion art fair artists make is underestimating
the value of their work. You will never make enough money to support
yourself solely on art sales if your profit margin is not in line with
what you need to make the nut every month, and cover expenses,
material costs, and have funds left over to apply for new shows and
pay for booth fees out six months in advance.
If you need $5000 month in sales then you need to have the shows in
that month that will get you there. If you need $10,000 a month in
sales then you need that to cover your ass. You might need $20,000 in
sales, it's all revelant. Some shows can cost you many thousands to
do, others hundreds. Typically the more you invest in the show the
better the return.
You will never get there if you don't take it seriously, and of course
have work that appeals to the high end. You can try to sell on
volume, but from my experience, volume wont get you to the level you
need to be at to sustain yourself long term.
