I agree. Doing it for free will cause an uphill battle later on.
You can try to seek out wedding photographers that might not use or have a second shooter. Offer to shoot a wedding for free but have pre-agreed to amount if after the shoot the photographer wants to use any of your images. If they like your images and want to use them in their package to the wedding couple after the fact, then you get paid a fair price for being a second shooter and you gain experience. If they decide they don't want to use the images then they owe you nothing but you still gain some experience. This way they don't have to worry that they will pay for something they won't use.
