I couldn't agree more. Not everyone has a $3000 or higher printer nor is a printer of that size a reasonable option for someone who prints only dozens of prints a year.
As far as control over the process, I have profiled my display and download my service's profiles for printer/paper combos and I use the perceptual rendering intent - so far have had no color nightmares.
