I should preface that I believe that keeping government as small as possible
is preferred.
That said, government contracts drive a large number of private jobs these
days. and by these days I mean these decades.
the government has been a jobs creator since the 1930s. New Deal, then
wartime, then cold war, now war on terror.
defense jobs during the 1940s are directly credited with ending the
depression be it in the military or defense jobs
the Saturn V project directly and indirectly employed more than 250,000
people during the 1960s and 1970s.
there isn't a single president that hasn't grown the government in some
way. Since Eisenhower 5 presidents, 3 republicans and 2 democrats, have
added cabinet-level positions. The most recent was under George W. cabinet
positions result in major growth in bureaucracy
