There's even another option, and that's not matting them but just inserting
prints into clear bags with a piece of white cardboard in the bag for
stiffness. There's a well-known photographer who does art festivals and uses
this method. He prints a border around the photo that looks a bit like a mat
but of course isn't.
I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it but I can see how this lowers his
unit cost. He tells me he's never had a complaint.
