Good report on the storm Jim. I was not watching the weather closely.
And no one came by my booth to warn me in advance, wish they had. It
is of course the artists responsibility to be watching. I'm not all
that seasoned with these storms in the midwest, but I know now, what
can happen. I was pretty much under the weather so to speak, as I
spent Thursday night in the ER at a hospital down the road with
Shingles. I spent most of Friday, in my van with booth sitters for the
show keeping me open. My wife even flew in from NY to help out on
Saturday, and I was feeling better, vicodin helps! I sure forgot all
about my pain while trying to hold down my center tent pole.
As Oscar mentioned, best to keep an eye on the radar. I do have a
smart phone for that. Of course that iphone is now dead, since it was
in my pocket while I was battling the storm, and lying on the ground
gripping my tent pole in a river of water:)
At least our efforts to keep the tent from flying away did some good.
It could have flipped over and all the work scattered about the
parking lot behind. Instead, it was a collapse, internally, and the
work landed on the pro panels that folded up, with the work on top of
them. Most of the work was saved, dont know how that happened. The
frames are damaged, but the work mounted on gator board is dry. 15 or
more frames damaged, a few survived intact.
I will order new parts from Trimline today, to make a double, as I'm
in Virginia Beach in two weeks, and will need it. But for this weekend
I have 3 days to regroup, put together a single and head to Chicago.
It's a good thing to have extra inventory, for cases just like this,
and be able to regroup. You never know what is going to happen next.
an artist came up to me in the aftermath of the storm, and said he had
his entire trailer stolen at Fort Worth. It had a hitch lock, but they
just dragged it away. What I learned form that story is to have wheel
locks on your trailer. This is the second time I've heard about
thieves stealing trailers in Texas.
