RE: [artshow_photo] Re: What are your bestselling subjects?

I did it a couple years ago and haven't been able to get in since. It was a
great show to do and I'll keep applying.

It is a very hard question to answer because it is individual to each
person. It also depends on your business model. If you want to go with
low price, high volume cute pictures with or without funny sayings will
probably do well. Ask Larry about the Teddy Bears. Location is important
too - personal experience - Alaska photographs do not sell in Florida. They
will get you a lot of questions about where to go in Alaska or stories about
trips to Alaska. Every retiree in Florida it seems has either been there or
wants to go. I got tired of being a tour guide and took them all down. Any
photograph that someone thinks they can take themselves, whether they can or
not, will not sell well. I used to do a lot of bird photographs. Very few
of them sold well because these were birds people saw all the time in
Florida even though the photographs were very difficult to get.

The real truth is - we haven't got a clue or at least I don't. I find it
very difficult to look at one of my photographs and estimate whether it will
sell or not. One of my very best sellers almost ended up deleted. Even
after I printed it and put it up I didn't think it was that great. Until it
started selling and getting selected for judging left and right. Another
one I was sure was going to fly off the walls, barely moved. And one that
used to fly off the walls, just suddenly up and quit one day. I used to
bring one for the wall and two spares and it was a rare show that I didn't
sell at least two. The last ten shows I have done, I haven't sold a single
one of that photograph. I can't explain it.

My best advice - find where your heart is. Put them on the wall and see
what flies, modify as necessary.
