Selling Stock Photography Re: Selling Stock photos

I would say that the information given here about Alamy (and other places) is misleading (to say the least).

Someone has 7200 images on their computer. This person needs to keyword them (and first learn about keywording), work on them to get them ready to be submitted etc. etc. (almost ad infinitum). Of 7200 images, the experience would definitely suggest that if even half of those are marketable and stand a chance of a sale, that's an achievement in itself. Sure, many make 1 dollar per picture per year, but a lot depends on where the photos were taken, what quality they are (technically and otherwise), how they are keyworded, what kind of a rank the photographer will have after a year or so (if similars or inferior stuff are submitted, the person's rank will plummet and after about a year no one will see the photos because they will be piled up towards the end of searches.)

If, on the other hand, you have images that have been taken with RAW (at least 12.2mp camera, with good quality lens), they are well keyworded, and you have imagery of rare places, rare things, things that are rarely taken but in demand, you can make 10 dollars per picture easily. If you have a good variety of high-demand and high-supply shots AND lots of low-demand but also lowly supplied subjects/location, you'll do even better. For instance, if among your 7200 images you have rare things like shots from Iraq, Libya, Saudi Arabia or some other such places, mixed with killer shots of the Eiffel Tower, Manhattan skyline, Sydney Opera House, shots that are so good that despite the great supply they will be bought at least once, you are really in business.

But at the end of the day I agree with the first poster. Keep it as a hobby. There is absolutely zero sense in getting into the ratrace now. The image prices are falling, and it's a lot of work. If you are hard up, consider investing or similar ventures which can bring in a lot more money.

Situation is such in the field now that many people are not only investing a lot of money on equipment but they are also wasting their time for low returns. I would say that 90% of "stock photographers" out there are losing money by shooting stock - and of course wasting their time.
