Debby:
In an earlier post, you said, in regard to applying for a Minnesota sales tax ID:
"While the social security number is 'required' on the form, the EIN is not."
If something is not required, you should be able to leave it blank and continue the process. Did you try to move on at that point?
I operate as a sole proprietor, without employees, and therefore do not have a Federal EIN. I was able to obtain a Minnesota tax ID without difficulty.
Also, before I moved to Minnesota I did one show in Hibbing in 2006, when I still lived and worked in Texase. I was able to apply for a temporary MN state tax ID for that show only. If that option is still available, that seems like a more appropriate situation for you. The temporary ID came with instructions for filing and paying the taxes. If my filing system was better, I would provide you with that info, but...
You say that you don't fault the promoter, but it is illegal for them to accept you into a show and rent you space without confirming that you have a valid tax ID. The form ST-19 you filled out has a space for the ID number. If you didn't put anything in, the promoter should not have allowed you to sell. Of course, it's not your fault if they did.
I would try again to apply for the tax ID. Good luck!
