About 6 months ago I started selling 11x14s in clearbags on an 11x14 piece of acid free matboard. I've had good luck selling them. I did it because I didn't have 16x20 clearbags and this seemed really easy for me and possibly convenient for the purchaser. Besides, they fit in the bin I had at one gallery.
However, at another gallery some photographers have started matting sizes as large or larger than 11x14 and I'm afraid my photographs are getting lost along with the much larger ones in the bin. So it depends on where you are selling them. In your own space, you can present as you wish, of course.
I also hear customers say that they are not going to mat photographs. I've been offering some number of unmatted framed pieces and they have been selling reasonably well. Recently a customer ordered a 16x20 print and said she was not going to mat it.
