I'm surprised people bought something in a cheap Michael's poster (plastic?) frame for $100. Was it matted or even mounted onto anything that was acid-free? I sell 13x19 print matted to 18x24 for $95.

Sort of a "W" style with frames on each side (this would help with balance). Draw people in with the canvas and if they can not afford $275 or whatever, they can scale down to $100 framed OR - go lower to the $20 8x12.
Keep in mind that what sold well this year may not sell well next year, from experience.

I wouldn't bother with cheap poster frames. I saw a photographer have 20x30 prints printed on a 24x36 piece of thin/cheap paper with something stiff behind it in a clear bag. You might consider something similar which reduces your cost but is providing the buyer with less. It would force them to get it mounted and matted when they get it custom framed, or they can just throw it in a Michael's 24x36 frame with just the paper if they want.
