RE: [artshow_photo] Winter gear for photographers = boots?

Hello Victoria,

I have several pairs of Merrill shoes, but mostly the summery type, sliders,
they are great. I would certainly check them out.

I have lived in rainy/cold western Washington for the last 30 years,
standing in the pouring rain, snow, and freezing temperatures to both fish
and photograph. The smart socks, Dougie mentions, I believe are called Smart
Wool, I have worn them for years, they are very good. That company also
makes a liner sock which is very important to wicking away any moisture your
foot might generate and then be damp and cold; it wicks it to the smart wool
socks, which by the way are 'itchless', merlino wool allows that. I have
been wearing Vasque boots with a Gore-Tex liner (absolutely water proof.

My best advice.contact a great outdoor supply store like REI, tell them your
situation and particulars; you should get excellent advice from them; I
always have. BTW, my Vasque boots are 12 years old, still great, resoled a
few times, but good for another 12 years, I'd guess. I have two pairs and
rotate them, I wear them almost daily; October to May.yep, it's wet and cool
here.

Stay well, warm and dry, having fun,

John

Hi Victoria,

I do a lot of mountaineering and hiking in the winter. I
personally love my Merrell waterproof hiking boots. Using smart socks
with them, I've never had cold or wet feet. One other thing that helps
a lot are gators. They help prevent snow from getting into the top of
the boots (hence, making the socks wet).
