Re: [artshow_photo] Re: Faster way to clone one TB drive?

I've got a 32GB SSD sitting here on my desk for the next time I need to
power the system down. My two logical drives are both on the same
spindle, so all disk access has to contend for the same disk resource.
I'm going to assign all the various swap files (Windows paging file,
Photoshop scratch disk, etc.) to the SSD to get those disk accesses off
the main drive.

I figured it was cooler and quieter than putting a small 15K rpm SCSI
disk in. Besides, the mother board I used doesn't have any spare PCI
slots to put the SCSI controller in.

Re: [artshow_photo] Upgrade PC - was New Mac Computer

I am running Win 7 and have 10GB of Ram working. Interestingly the
motherboard specs say it will only
run 8 but the computer says it is using 10 and crashes when I try to use
12. So I actually have three
4GB sticks in the machine. My thought was that these have to run in equal
pairs but I called Mushkin
and the tech said that they would actually run as singles or in my case
three.

[artshow_photo] Upgrade PC - was New Mac Computer

If you have to go with a brand name, I would stay away from
DELL and go with HP. As to CPUs Intel chips are more expensive,
but run cooler. The conventional wisdom says Intel chips run faster.
If you are buying a system with a $1000+ Intel cpu chip, that is correct,
however if you compare Intel cpus to AMD cpus in the same price
range the difference evaporates.

What OS you run can also make a difference. If you still run XP, that OS
takes little advantage of multi cores. Thus Clock speeds are more important
than multi cores. If you are running Win 7 64 bit, multi cores can be a
factor
IF the software is stet up for it also.

Win 7 64bit can make use of 8 gigs of ram. 32 bit systems cannot -
anything over 3-4 gig is a waste.

If your primary use is Photoshop editing with CS3 - CS5 then the Video
Card is extremely important. CS3,4,5 now make use of Open GL to
support the UI. They have a software switch to go back to the older methods,
but that slows down the software noticeably. Plain consumer type gamming
cards (ie. Geforce etc) have Open GL implemented OK, but do not have
"overlay planes". Workstation cards, like nVidia Quadros have better
implementations of open GL and support the "Overlay Planes".
This makes Photoshop's UI smooth as silk and run faster.
Recommended Quadro FX580 or AMD Fire Pro V3750 about $140-$180

In addition the current crop of workstation cards all have display port
interfaces
which gives you true 10 bit per channel RGB output for over a billion
colors and
expanded gamut. Of course you will need a monitor to match and they are
quite expensive. And the Windows GDI supports this only on Win 7.

I would buy the stock machine and add the video card afterwards as those
cards are usually not available in plain user desktops.

Hope this helps.

There are a bunch of magazines and online sites and Apps for iPad
which review and discuss various apps = what you may want is a
database and FileMaker is an excellent, if over powerful, one.

That is just what I do. C:\ is for CODE
D:\Drive is DATA ONLY - NO CODE
Malware goes after code. I can reformat and
re-install the OS and all programs from original
disks for C: Even with back ups, you never know
if the malware is on the backups also.

[artshow_photo] Re: New monitor?

As long as you can profile the monitor you should be fine. I have an Apple 27" as my primary display but also bought an Eizo CG222W. I use the Eizo as the primary display for photoshop and lightroom. Much better control with the profiling. Got a good price so that's why I got it. Running a MacPro tower. But I have good things about the iMacs. Best advice...buy the fastest, most memory, best graphics card, largest drive (if it only has one internal) that you can afford. Don't look back. It's always cheaper tomorrow :)

Re: [artshow_photo] New monitor?

Another thing to remember is if you buy a monitor in conjunction with
a regular Apple machine and get AppleCare it applies to both the
machine and the monitor [check this out but it's what was true 2-3
yrs ago. I had an issue with my monitor and I recall they either
replaced that or the video card, no problem.

Re: [artshow_photo] New monitor?

Well, unlike the PC manufacturers, you can actually go to an Apple
retail store and see the actual product that you are considering. Yes,
you can go to a big box store and see monitors, but they won't be
attached to a machine with the same video card you are using, and they
will all be expressly decalibrated for maximum saturation and contrast -
great for selling monitors in a poorly-lit warehouse but not helpful if
you intend to do serious color work.

PC users tend to buy their components from Newegg or another online
merchant. Better stuff at better prices and all. But it probably isn't
going to be the same model that Costco has on the shelf.

Incidentally, after you buy an Apple product you have 12 months in which
to purchase AppleCare for it, which gives you another two years
full-coverage warranty. AppleCare is nothing short of awesome, although
I have to say that my experience with Dell isn't all that far behind. My
wife uses a Macbook Air which she bought refurbed from Apple. We kept
meaning to spring for the AppleCare and ended up doing so the day after
the one year was up. Four months later the hard drive died, and we
discovered that the crucial next step of connecting the AppleCare policy
to the actual hardware was not done. Not to worry, despite having
screwed it all up on our end, they got it covered. Then, when they
couldn't replace the hard drive, they had me drive over and get a brand
new machine with a faster processor and larger hard drive. And they gave
me the old hard drive so I could try to salvage the contents, which I
was able to do.

With a desktop PC, if something goes wrong with a component you can just
call somebody like me and we'll drop in something suitable, although it
will almost certainly not be an exact replacement. It might be an
upgrade. The "problem" with Macs is that there isn't a panoply of
third-party products that you can swap in when you run into problems.
Now there are those who have difficulties with this, but I'm going to
bet that they don't get upset about the exact same reality when it comes
to their cars. If you throw a rod in your Mustang, you can't just
trivially upgrade to a Mopar Hemi or a big-block Chev. Even though I
appreciate the flexibility of the PC architecture, and make a good part
of my living catering to it, I can't really see that Apple's approach is
bad for the customer.

Anyway, when I first saw the glossy monitors on the iMacs I was
horrified, but when I've sat down and used them I've had no problem at all.

[artshow_photo] Re: New Mac Computer

Hi Bernie & ArtShow,
I can relate to your story. My artistic (music/photography) friends all used MACs but I was a PC guy as well - plus the cost scared me away. I had to update defender/virus protection almost daily and I lost an entire shoot (over 1000 photos) when I downloaded my pics to my HP laptop to erase my CF cards for another shoot and the laptop failed before I had a chance to copy them to another drive or my Compaq desktop at home. I paid $$ and all the PC geek could retrieve from that laptop were about 5 photos from that shoot.

In 2007 I decided I needed a new Desktop as my (2003) Compaq could not run CS2 & Bridge at the same time without crashing and I went and looked at all these powerful PC desktops and asked the salesman if I could have XP installed instead of the just released Vista as I had heard Vista had many problems. The salesman said "No" he had to sell me one with Vista.. Almost out of spite and definitely an "off the cuff" decision, I looked at him and said to just get me that 24" IMAC instead. It was the best decision I have made this decade. My learning curve was a matter of unlearning all the bad habits I had developed using PCs as MACs are much more intuitive :) When I plug in a new hard drive, I dont have to download any software or drivers, the MAC immediately see's the new drive and I am in business. It takes me longer to unpack a hard drive from the box that it does to get it working on the MAC.
You may more up front for MACs but the maintenance and headaches are minimal and just not having to deal with the constant updates from Microsoft everyday is a real blessing.
My .02,
Carlton

I had an IT guy on call for the various things that my PC needed. He was here at least bi-monthly and often more, over the course of 3 or 4 years. In one conversation he mentioned that he was very familiar with Macs too. I asked which he would recommend and he said he likes PCs because if everybody went with Macs he would be out of a job. Months later I decided to make the switch. He came and helped me set up the MacPro, a wireless network with printer & MacBookPro (a much more complicated system than I had previously) and I found he was right. That was the last time I had to call him. That was about about 2 1/2 years ago. For me personally, I could have bought the Mac & big monitor on day one and still had a few bucks left over with what I paid the IT guy during my PC days.

Also MS Office suite and maybe a video editing software. What do you recommend? I don't want to spend this much money and then discover that I didn't get enough horsepower, etc.
