In addition to color balance and tonal accuracy, there are many
"adjustables" that will affect the quality of a print - sharpening,
antialiasing and noise reduction are two big ones that come to mind.
Also, the color of the paper is an important factor, which is why
printer/paper/ink profiles are so important. In addition, commercial
labs will use a hardware or software raster image processor - RIP -
which will greatly speed up the process and offer greater control over
how the ink is laid onto the paper.
A good finisher can take an average print made by a hobbyist on a home
based inket and literally turn it into a stunning work of art. It's not
just click and print if you really care about your print quality.
