Yes, since I wrote this I am thinking the same thing about the fragility of the velvet fine art and am thinking of using Hahnemeuhle photo rag, which has a much smoother surface. I am working out color management issues with my new 3880, and will need to get a custom icc profile made for my new Epson paper. I had everything dialed in on my 2400 and now it is like starting fresh.

Interesting about the sales. I will be offering large frames pieces as well. Guess if the fly out of the booth ; -), then I can replace them with my bagged prints. Guess it is time to stock up on Aaron Bros frames at their July sale.

I am wondering whether the Velvet Fine Art paper, with its fragile surface, will hold up as well to the public taking out and putting back the foam core-backed prints in the print bin. I suspect a mat would help protect the print surface somewhat more than the clearbag would. Or maybe I'm wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

By the way, at a recent show I sold virtually no smaller prints, with large, framed pieces making up most of my sales. The middle class who used to buy prints on a whim are holding onto their money, but the "professional class" still has money and is willing to spend. Of course, that result was location-specific, and shows in different locations will have different results.

Re: Selling Stock Photography Stockpiling trouble: How the stock industry ate itself?

Brian,

I've been able to adapt just slowing down the process is painful....

When my assignments started fading this year I went out and created my own. I photographed Hotels and Resorts then called them up and sold the images back as stock. The same goes with restaurants and boutiques. Funny thing is if you call them to bid on the job you have a slim chance of getting it but show them the results and it usually ends with a big sale. Don't get me wrong....I am a happy camper, it's just having to devote more time to the business side and less to the creative....I'd rather be out photographing....

Thank you. I have no real advice or counsel for you, just a few words of

The idea of having fifty thousand images though...I can't imagine how that feels.

[artshow_photo] Thanks for the help! I will sell my photos without mats! OK, 1 more question..

Thanks for all of the suggestions about selling my photos without mats. I think that I have come down to printing on Epson velvet fine art and producing three sizes of prints - 6x9, 10x15 and 20x131/2. Each will fit into a standard frame - 12x16, 16x20, and 22x28. I think I will mat the 6x9 but offer the other two on acid free foam core as a stiffiner.

The last question - what suggestions do folks have to attach the print to the foam core so that it will stay centered in the Clear Bag? Is there something that could just be "dotted" into the two upper corners but would also allow the print to be easily removed from the foam core by the buyer without damaging the print? I think that hinging tape would show, right? In my perfect world there would be a sort of glue or adhesive that could be easily applied and which would allow someone to remove the print without harm. Am I dreaming??

Thanks SO much to all of you! My first show is coming up and there are so many decisions to make!!!

Well, I am encouraged that you are at least receptive to clear thinking, but I see we still have work to do on the environmentalist
propaganda that is cluttering up your mind.

Stay tuned and we will bring you all the way home.

Are you mounting the piece on the foamboard or just putting it in the
bag for rigidity to prevent damage to print? I am brand new with my
first show in 3 weekd and trying to decide how to sell prints. Thanks

Hi,
By all means sell your prints with out mats. Put them in clear Bags with
foam core cut to size and your business card and brochure behind the foam
core on the back side so its visible. Serious collectors and just your
average buyer will by the work with any hesitation. They are buying the
image because they like it not becasue the mat matches the couch. You get to
reduce your inventory cost and increase your profit. I personal only mat
8x10 but lately I've been selling a few on matted and sell my my pano prints
ummatted. Everything 11x14 and upwards is sold unmatted except for a few
11x14" I frame for the gallery I belong to. The few festivals I do
I hang unmatted prints on the pro panels and they sell just fine. That's
just me I travel with very little glass/framed work. Most of my images are
mounted on wood panels and image printed on aluminum and other metal or
clear film that are mounted on ceramic tiles.

Give it a try and see how your sales are.

I am trying to decide how to offer my fine art prints for sale in the bins.
I had originally thought that I would mat them and put them in Clear Bags.
But after reading some discussion online, it seems that serious
photographers are simply putting the finished prints into the clear bags
with a stiffiner like acid free foam core or mat board and then letting the
customer decide later how to matt/frame them.

Everybody donates work for one reason or another.

My response was specifically regarding public parks, which have advertising budgets.

I assure you the printers, graphic designers, ad agencies, publications, etc. are not waiving their fees in lieu of karma points.

I personally have done thousands of dollars of business with state and national parks, and have also made thousands of dollars licensing photographs that I took inside public parks.

When I license a park photograph that , let's say, illustrates a magazine article, that particular park ( and to a lesser degree public parks in general) receives thousands of dollars of free advertising, and I make a few hundred dollars. I would argue that it is a win-win situation and not the one-sided affair that Mr. Cochran describes.

Even if you display a framed print and title it "Acadia National Park" you are advertising for that park.

So, if you are serious about profiting from your photography, examine your philanthropy guidelines very carefully.

Yes. That's the easiest way to handle it. If you use an inkjet, make sure you get inkjet compatible labels. If you use a laser, then use laser labels.

You can get small sheets of 5 labels in some sizes, so that you can print a few at a time, when you don't need a whole sheet of labels. I use Avery 5436 quite a bit.
