I think the 72 comes for SO many books that tell you that in order to make a
photo small enough for the internet it must be no more then 72dpi - of course
that was back when everyone had dial-ups!

"friends"
that I don't mind it sends good will and could actually HELP sell an image.
This is called "smart marketing". It costs you nothing and gets your work in
front of more faces.
